SJCE Is Our Local Electricity Supplier

San José Clean Energy, or SJCE, is San José’s locally-run electricity supplier, providing residents and businesses with clean energy at competitive rates. Operated by the City of San José’s Community Energy Department, we’re dedicated to creating a more sustainable future for our community and future generations. SJCE plays a crucial role in Climate Smart San José, the city’s climate action plan.

The San José City Council unanimously voted to create SJCE in May 2017. We launched service in February 2019. The elected representatives on the City Council govern all SJCE decisions during public meetings, where customers are welcome to speak and give feedback.

By the end of 2022, SJCE’s $1 billion investment in new renewable resources and energy storage will power 300,000 San José homes annually.

All revenues stay right here in San José. We’re “owned” by the community.

We don’t have to charge extra to generate a profit or pay dividends to shareholders, which helps keep our prices competitive and stable. Plus, we invest in local programs that create value for all residents here in San José.

SJCE is governed by your San José City Council, with input from a Community Advisory Commission. All our meetings are open to the public:

Communities throughout California are already benefiting from their own locally controlled electricity providers: over 10 million residents and businesses have collectively saved millions of dollars and cut greenhouse gas emissions drastically. There are ten Northern California Community Choice Energy programs similar to San José Clean Energy.

A PROVEN CONCEPT

There are currently 23 Community Choice Aggregators (CCAs), also known as Community Choice Energy (CCE) programs, serving more than 11 million customers in over 170 counties, cities, and towns in California. More CCAs will be formed in the near future.

CCAs provide competitively priced clean energy options to customers and reinvest revenues into our communities to achieve greenhouse gas reductions and health benefits. CCAs will continue to collectively make progress toward a clean energy future by investing in long term projects that will result in more than 10,000 megawatts (MW) of new renewable energy for the California grid.

We are public agencies led by staff with decades of experience in the energy industry and municipal utilities. As not-for-profits, CCAs keep costs competitive by not having shareholders and maintaining a public service culture of customer accountability.

CCAs operate under various models which include:

Single jurisdiction – A city or county individually establishes and operates a CCA as an enterprise fund within the municipality.
Joint Powers Authority – an independent, public agency that operates a CCA on behalf of its member municipalities.
Hybrid Joint Powers Authority – communities contract for the services that they need to operate a CCA by joining an existing joint powers authority as an associate member.
Commercial Vendor Package – a private company manages the CCA on behalf of local government(s).
